Glass pipes come in various shapes, sizes, and designs, each serving a unique purpose. Here are some common types of glass pipe parts and what they do:
- Bowl: This is part of the pipe where the substance (tobacco, cannabis, etc.) is placed and burned. It’s typically a small, cup-like part of the pipe.
- Carburetor (Carb): Found on most small and medium-sized pipes, the carb is a small hole that allows the user to clear smoke from the pipe’s chamber. Users cover the hole when inhaling and release it to clear the pipe.
- Stem: This tube carries the smoke from the bowl to the mouthpiece. The length and diameter of the stem can affect the smoking experience, with longer stems allowing the smoke to cool before it reaches the user.
- Mouthpiece: This is the part of the pipe the user puts their mouth on to inhale the smoke. Like the stem, the design of the mouthpiece can significantly affect the smoking experience.
- Downstem: The downstem is a tube that extends from the bowl into a water-filled base in a bong or water pipe. It allows the smoke to pass through the water, cooling and filtering it before it reaches the user.
- Perc (Percolator): A percolator is a component in some bongs and water pipes that further diffuses the smoke. It’s a glass structure that bubbles up the smoke, breaking it into smaller particles and providing additional filtration and cooling.
- Ash Catcher: An ash catcher is a removable attachment that fits onto a bong or water pipe. It catches ashes and debris, preventing them from entering the pipe’s main chamber and keeping it cleaner.
- Slide: In a bong or water pipe, the slide is a removable bowl. Users can pull it out to clear the smoke from the chamber quickly.
- Ice Pinch/Ice Catcher: Some glass pipes and bongs include an ice catcher, a series of notches in the stem that holds ice. The ice cools the smoke for a smoother hit.
